Another defendant enters plea in pipe bombing case

By Carey Phillips

A former Smoky Mountain High School student charged in connection with the detonation of a pipe bomb at the new Scotts Creek School construction site pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Monday in Jackson County Superior Court.

Matthew Wayne Breedlove of Sylva entered a guilty plea to a charge of aiding and abetting damage to personal property.

Judge Loto Caviness sentenced him to 45 days suspended for one year and placed him on unsupervised probation. He was ordered to perform 75 hours community service and pay costs. Caviness further ordered him to not be on the premises of Scotts Creek School and to have no contact with any of his co-defendants.

Breedlove was one of seven teenagers, including six SMHS students, charged in the case after bombs were exploded on two consecutive December weekends at the school construction site. He originally was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, malicious property destruction and conspiracy.

Four of the defendants pleaded guilty to misdemeanors in Superior Court last month. A fifth defendant, a minor at the time, had his case handled through the juvenile court system.

The only remaining defendant is Jennifer Parker. Her case may come up during the court term later this week.
