Historic marker dedicated

Chuck Wooten and Joe Carter Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling A historic marker to commemorate the site of Jackson County's first court session, the old Daniel Bryson homeplace in Beta, was dedicated Oct. 27 near the intersection of U.S. 23/74 and Cope Creek Road. The Bryson home, also the site of the organization of Jackson County's government, stood near the existing intersection. N.C. Sen. Dan Robinson of Cullowhee and N.C. Rep. Phil Haire of Sylva unveiled the marker, and U.S. District Court Judge Lacy Thornburg of Webster gave the dedication address. Funds for the marker were provided by the four daughters of former Jackson County Commission Chairman Jennings Bryson, who are great-great-granddaughters of Daniel Bryson. From left are Haire, Dotsy Carringer of Murphy, Cloyce Buchanan of Winston-Salem, Thornburg (back), Jeanneane Buchanan of Charlotte, Robinson and Bessta Raynor of Kernersville.
