Stop, drop and roll

Smart Start youngsters like Gracelyn, 2, and Bailey Luker, 21 months Fire is the number one danger to children in the home. Each year more than 1,000 children die in house fires and thousands more are injured. To help prevent further tragedies of this nature, more than 300 children in Jackson County daycares and preschools were taught to "stop, drop and roll" and "get low and go." Smart Start, in collaboration with Jackson County fire departments, youngsters like Gracelyn, 2, and Bailey Luker, 21 months, children of Mickey and Jennifer Luker of Cullowhee, received instruction, coloring books and fire hats, and their parents received "Tot Finder" reflective stickers to place on the children's bedroom windows to help firefighters identify where a child might be in the event of a fire. In addition, parents are reminded to check smoke detectors monthly. "We would like to thank all the volunteers who helped make this preschool program possible," a Smart Start representative said.
