Seven to seek chief's position in upcoming tribal electionsBy Rose Hooper |

Filing in the 2003 Cherokee tribal elections has closed, leaving Principle Chief Leon Jones to face six contenders in the June 5 primary.
In addition to Jones, who has filed for re-election, those seeking the chief's position are Michell Hicks, Lloyd Carl Owle, Richard Samuel Sneed, Marion Tessateskie, Carroll "Pee Wee" Crowe and Bill Ledford. Filing for vice chief are Teresa Bradley McCoy, Larry Blythe, Sam Saunooke, Robert D. "Bob" Long, James D. Eller and James E. "Buddy" Lambert. The General Election is scheduled for Sept. 4. The following have filed for tribal council: Yellowhill: Alan B. Ensley, Bob Blankenship, Gerri Wolfe Grady, Donna Saunooke Ball, Richard Lance Welch, Mary "Missy" Crowe, Ted Major Lambert and Cheryl Shell Medford. Birdtown: Dan McCoy, Albert Dewitt Crowe, Michelle Owle, Jim Owle, William Jesse Murphy. Painttown: Tommy Saunooke, Mark Wayne Hicks, Marie L. Junaluska, Mike Driver, Jim Farris, Bentley Tahquette, Ned Edward Stamper, Wilma Taylor, Cynthia E. Grant and Mollie L. Grant. Wolfetown: Bob Parker, Wyatt Edward Chiltoskie, Kathryn Ann Elkins, Donald T. Thompson, Sallie T. Arch, Dwayne "Tuff" Jackson, Shirley Littlejohn Crowe, Carroll Eddie Crowe, Jonathan Dwight Littlejohn, Samuel Farrell Reed, Roland Carr Crowe, Denny Ensley, Mike Parker, Tony Cabe and Paul Ensley.
