Courthouse to be subject of SPIR photography contest

Deadline for submissions is Nov. 1

Sylva Partners in Renewal, downtown Sylva's revitalization program, is sponsoring a photography contest, the winner of which will be featured on the organization's first-ever postcard.

The subject of the contest is the old Jackson County Courthouse as it appears today. Contest organizers say they are looking for an image of the historic courthouse with its new color scheme.

"Jackson County's courthouse has always been recognized as North Carolina's most photographed courthouse," said SPIR Promotion Committee Chair Joyce Moore. "With this contest we hope to get the community involved in confirming this fact."

Rules for the contest are as follows:

* Photographs must be in color and must have been taken by the entrant.

* Photos should capture the old courthouse as it appears today (2000) in any season of the year.

* Photos should be at least 5 inches by 7 inches in size.

* Photos must not be computer enhanced.

* Photos must be unframed and unmounted.

* Participants may submit up to two photos, which should be dropped off at the SPIR office on Main Street in Sylva by Nov. 1

. * Photos and images become the property of SPIR upon submission and will not be returned.

Photographs, including the winning submission, will be displayed in downtown businesses.

Postcards created from the winning photo will give credit to the photographer on the blank side of the card. Scheduled for printing early in 2001, the cards will be marketed throughout the county and region, with proceeds from sales going to support SPIR projects.

For more information on the contest, including a complete list of rules, call SPIR Executive Director Richard McHargue at 586-1577.
