Preparing Christmas boxes for the elderly

Jackson County Department on Aging staff and volunteers will deliver more than 200 Christmas boxes to the county's elderly this season. "The response this year has been tremendous," said Helen Bryson, right, DOA director. "We've received a long list of people who should receive the gifts, as well as a record number of contributions from churches, civic groups, county agencies, Western Carolina University and the N.C. Association of State Employees. "For those who might not need the gift boxes, we are delivering baskets of fruit," Bryson said. "We are trying not to leave anybody out." Assisting Bryson are, from left, George Penland, Richard Smith, Judy Pounds, Karen Connor and Al Bouchard. Volunteers are also needed after the holiday season, said Connor, who directs the DOA nutrition sites. "If you have a craft or skill to share with senior citizens of this area, and you have time Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until noon, contact me at 586-8562," said Connor. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
