Nations awarded education medal

By Rose Hooper

Nations Ed Jones, right, Commander of American Legion Post 104, presents Fairview Elementary School Principal Sue Nations with the American Legion Educational Medal. The award was presented to Nations during a special "Veterans and Our Freedom" program Nov. 8 at the school. This was the first time the local post has presented this award, which went to Nations for her "distinguished achievement" in promoting "courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, service and scholarship." Also during Friday's Veterans Day program, Boy Scout Troop 903 presented the flags and lit patriotic candles; Tonya Pruett sang the national anthem; April Bryson and Lisa Wilson sang "My County 'Tis of Thee"; Dana Tucker sang "God Bless the USA"; and eighth-graders performed "Born in the USA."
Howard Allman read a recitation on "This I Believe," and Rachel Stewman read her "My Pledge to America" essay. Several veterans, including, from left, Vernon Hoyle and Roy Burnette, demonstrated and told the significance of the flag folding ceremony. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
