Members of Tuckasegee Wesleyan Church made their second batch of apple butter of the season this past weekend. Pudge McFalls (center) uses a horsehead stir to move the mixture around as Scott Ashe (left) adds more crushed Rome apples. Alana Fisher stands ready with a wooden spoon in case of any runover. Using two 28-gallon solid copper pots and a recipe brought here by Conrad Brown from Hancock, Md., church members spent more than 12 hours Saturday making 424 pints of apple butter from 18 bushels of apples, a touch of cinnamon oil and just enough sugar to taste. Proceeds from the sale of the apple butter, most of which is already spoken for, will be used for additional work on the church's new fellowship hall. The project, now in its fifth year, provides church members with a time of fellowship, said Pastor Jeff Powell. Brown, who initiated the apple butter benefit, said the project is a way to teach the next generation about the old ways.
