Accident sends two to Asheville hospital

By Carey Phillips

Three people were injured, two of them seriously, in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the intersection of Haywood Road and U.S. 74-441 near Dillsboro.

Trooper Denny Wood of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Dona Loree Reeves, 69, of Belleville, Mich., and Estie Ramsey, 72, of Leicester, were taken to Asheville's Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital. A hospital representative said Tuesday afternoon that Reeves was in serious condition while Ramsey was discharged Monday.

Beverly Wysocki, 66, of Belleville, was kept overnight at Harris Regional Hospital, according to Wood.

He said Reeves was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo with Ramsey and Wysocki as her passengers when the accident occurred at 5:40 p.m.

Wood said Reeves was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 74-441 from Haywood Road when the Monte Carlo was struck by an eastbound 2001 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Clifford H. Mault, 40, of Cullowhee. Mault was not injured, he said.

All three occupants of the Monte Carlo had to be extricated by the Jackson County Rescue Squad, Wood said.

He said the westbound lanes were closed for nearly 90 minutes while eastbound traffic was halted for 20 to 25 minutes.
