Open house set for REACH Village

REACH of Jackson County will hold a ribbon cutting and open house for the new REACH Village at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The village is located in Sylva's Lovesfield community on Plum Street. Those attending should wear old walking shoes since the building site is still muddy.

The REACH Village is the only transitional housing program for survivors of domestic violence in the seven western counties of North Carolina and one of only a handful across the state.

Traditional housing is a mode concept that recognizes the significant barriers to self-sufficiency that victims of family violence often must surpass: lack of transportation, no child care, a disrupted work history, low self-esteem, post traumatic stress disorder, and insufficient education or job skills.

The REACH Village is a comprehensive support program for survivors who have resolved the crisis stage of their abuse and are committee to creating a healthy life free from violence.

The goal is to provide survivors with the time and support they need to become self-supporting and contributing members of the community.

Refreshments will be served during the open house, and a tour of the facilities will be given.
