Trucks destroyed by fire; tools stolen

By Rose Hooper

Johnny Frady of East LaPorte is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever set his trucks on fire.

About 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, Frady said his two 3/4-ton trucks - a 1977 flat bed a 1979 Ford 4-wheel drive burned. The trucks were parked at the mouth of Caney Fork, near his home on Helen Zachary Road.

"If it had not been for the quick response of the Cullowhee Fire Department, we could have had a bad situation," Frady said. ³I have a woodpile right next to where the trucks were parked, and that could have caught on fire.²

The location is across N.C. 107 from the East LaPorte River Access Park.

Detective Robbie Arneach with the Jackson County Sheriff¹s Department said it appeared the inside of the truck cabs had been set on fire.

The Sheriff's Department is also investing a larceny at the scene of the crime. According to Frady, log chains, log binders and hand tools were taken from the trucks before the vehicles were destroyed by fire.

If you have information about the crime, call the Jackson County Sheriff¹s Department at 586-8901.
