FFA, New Century Scholars glean tomatoes

pickers Members of Smoky Mountain High's Future Farmers of America Club and the school's New Century Scholars recently spent a day gleaning some 15,000 pounds of tomatoes to help feed the area's hungry. pickers About 60 local students joined other groups to pick more than 7 tons of tomatoes at Jeff Darnell's Farm in Bryson City. For their efforts, students were rewarded with pizza and subs donated by Pizza Hut, Subway and Wal-Mart.
FFA These Jackson County students and teachers helped glean almost 15,000 pounds of tomatoes as part of the Society of St. Andrews annual gleaning effort. This year makes the third that Smoky Mountain students have participated, and their effort almost tripled last year's total. Becky Wilson of the Farm Service Agency coordinated the food-gathering event with the help of Sherry Brown. Smoky Mountain FFA sponsor Chan Chandler and New Century Scholars coordinators Alice Pendergast and Gladys Bishop accompanied their students and helped with the gleaning effort that helped feed the hungry at the Community Table in Sylva, Cherokee United Methodist Church, Olivet Methodist Church in Whittier and God's Helping Hands food ministry in Georgia.
