Nationally-certified teachers

School system officials congratulated five county teachers who recently received National Board Certification during Monday's (Jan. 27) meeting of the Jackson County Board of Education. Following remarks by Fitzallen Eldridge, the county's first instructor to complete requirements for national certification, Superintendent Mack McCary presented a certificate to each. Teachers honored are, from left, Marcia Kotila and Cindy Mathews, Cullowhee Valley; Elizabeth Harmon, Fairview; and Anna Hair and Cindi Simmons, Smoky Mountain High. This group brings the county's total number of nationally-certified teachers to 10. In addition to Eldridge, other instructors who have earned national certification are Glenda Dills, Marianna Kesgen and Dennis Proffitt of Fairview and Mary Ann Barker of SMHS. National certification is a yearlong process that requires an extensive portfolio, videotapes of the teacher at work, assessments and self-evaluation. Once national certification is attained, North Carolina teachers receive a 12 percent salary increase. - Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling
