TWSA rates readjusted to 10 percent increase

By Rose Hooper

Following a Sept. 17 public hearing, members of the Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority agreed again to increase water and sewer rates 10 percent.

Board members had approved a 10 percent rate increase for water and sewer services in June.

But when the increase went into effect July 1, some customers brought to the attention of the authority that the rate increase fluctuated, and in some instances it even doubled 10 percent.

That information prompted board members, with calculators in hand, to hold a workshop during which they reviewed the new rate system. Following the workshop and the subsequent public hearing, the rates were reset at a flat 10 percent increase, which will be reflected in October bills.

"That's what we initially agreed upon, and that's what I voted for," said board member Brad Moses.

"Rebate" for those who were charged excessive fees during the interim will not be available, board members agreed.

The across-the-board 10 percent increase in no way affects impact fees, board member Jim Cochran pointed out. Some developers have said their impact fees increased more than 100 percent in July.

For instance, the previous rate for a 3/4-inch water meter was $500, which increased to $1,200 July 1. Sewer impact fees on that size meter increased from $750 to $1,200, while the increase on a 1-inch meter went from $750 to $3,200.
