Sue Nations, principal of Fairview Elementary School, recently received a Distinguished Service to Science Education award from the North Carolina Science Teachers Association.
Nations and other award winners were chosen because they "exhibit dedication and excellence" and are "giving their all for the betterment of the children of the state."
Nations, Fairview's leader since 1995, encourages hands-on science education, said Marianna Kesgen, a middle grade science teacher at the school. Nations has also been a leading force in the development of Fairview's WildWatch outdoor classroom.
"Starting with a natural wetland area on the school grounds, (Nations) motivated the teachers, students and parents to develop the site with the help of UTOTES grants and to integrate all areas of the curriculum into its use," Kesgen said. "She continually encourages all her teachers to use science to stimulate and excite learning in all subject areas."
