Sylva town officials, along with Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck (right), met Monday to inspect a potential site for a proposed fire department training facility. Beck asked town board members March 7 for permission to construct a building on town-owned property that is part of Sylva's former Fisher Creek watershed. Firefighters hope to secure $200,000 in grant funding to build a training facility above the upper storage basin (left) near Dills Branch, Beck said. The site would be ideal, Beck said, because the storage pond could provide water for the firefighters' needs. In addition, Beck said, it would allow his department to train as a unit and could be utilized by other county volunteer fire departments. Sylva board members decided to tour the site to determine its proximity to residences before making a decision on the firefighters' request prior to April 1. - Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling
