Sisters
Button Editor's Note: For a week beginning with Memorial Day, it seems appropriate for The Sylva Herald to select the following as its weekly installment of a review of our back issues as The Sylva Herald and Ruralite celebrates its 75th anniversary throughout 2001.

From the Aug. 30, 1951 issue:

"To be honored in Jackson County's Centennial Celebration next week are the Gold Star Mothers of the county. These are the mothers who lost sons in World War II. The organization is known as the Jackson County Chapter of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.

They are: Mrs. John R. Jones, president; Mrs. T.C. Bryson, vice president; Mrs. T.C. Cannon, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. G.T. Hampton, chaplain; Mrs. W.O. Perkins, sergeant-at-arms; Mrs. Mamie Ensley, historian; Mrs. Mary Jane Watson, color bearer; Mrs. Ralph Toy, Mrs. Neal Bishop, Mrs. Frank Allman and Mrs. Will Bryson.

Certificate

Thanks to Mildred Settlemyer for sharing this Sisters of the Swish picture and the accompanying memorabilia.

These mothers whose sons sacrificed their lives that we many enjoy our Centennial Week, should be given first place in the parade."

Another group of women who marched in that Centennial Parade was the Sisters of the Swish. While the Brothers of the Brush grew beards for the occasion, the women donned "typical old-fashion styles."
