Suspect in weekend shooting remains at large, officers say

By Lisa Majors-Duff

The suspect in "a domestic disturbance that turned violent" over the weekend remains at large, a spokesman with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

Officers with the Sheriff's Department are seeking Guadalupe Vega, 22, of Mill Creek Road, Cashiers, for questioning following a shooting Saturday night.

The victim, Diane Carter, 40, of Asheville, was struck twice by bullets from a small hand gun, said Capt. David Grant of the Sheriff's Department, once in the head and once in the leg. Carter was treated and released from Harris Regional Hospital.

Warrants for Vega's arrest include charges of first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and assault inflicting serious injury.

As of Tuesday Vega, who officers said has most likely fled the area, had not been found, though a vehicle believed to be driven last by him was recovered in the East Sylva Shopping Center parking lot.

Anyone with information pertaining to the shooting or Vega's location should call the Sheriff's Department at 586-4480.
