Board names Clark next SMES principal

By Lynn Hotaling

Clark Clark For the second time in as many years, local school officials have gone outside Jackson County to fill a principal's slot.

Terry Clark of Candler, currently assistant principal at West McDowell Junior High School in Marion, will take the helm at Smokey Mountain Elementary after Principal Tom Dowell retires in June.

Superintendent Mack McCary recommended Clark to members of the Jackson County Board of Education Wednesday morning (May 15). The vote confirming her appointment was unanimous.

"Our interview team was impressed with the depth of her knowledge and experience in instruction, motivation, discipline and leading change, and feel confident she is the person Smokey Mountain Elementary needs to help the school achieve its dreams," Superintendent Mack McCary said.

Clark, an Arizona native who grew up in Macon County and graduated from Nantahala High School, earned her doctorate in education last year from Appalachian State University. She also holds a master's in educational administration from Western Carolina University and a bachelor's degree from Mars Hill College.

A 17-year education veteran, Clark began her teaching career at Southwestern Elementary School in Windsor, where she taught math and science in grades 5-8. She has also taught in Wilcox, Ariz., and Greenville, S.C.

Clark spent three years teaching N.C. history and language arts at Macon Middle School in Franklin before taking her current job.

She has a total of five years of experience as an assistant principal. In addition to her years at West McDowell, Clark was an assistant at Forest Hills High in Marshville for two years.

While at West McDowell, Clark developed teacher handbooks, planned and coordinated "Parents Night Out," a program designed to help parents better understand their teenager, and developed and implemented remediation programs seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders.

"We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Terry Clark as the new principal of Smokey Mountain Elementary School." McCary said. "Since she grew up in Nantahala and has worked in Cherokee and Western North Carolina, we feel like we are welcoming her home. She brings a wealth of teaching and leadership experience, including middle school, high school and adult education."
