More than 500 volunteers turned out Saturday (April 20) to do their part for a cleaner Tuckaseigee River, said Shane Williams, outdoor programs coordinator for Western Carolina's Last Minute Productions. Participants hiked the banks and rode in rafts and canoes as they collected litter from East LaPorte to Barkers Creek. "This year's group was really dedicated," Williams said. "They picked up even more trash than last year. We filled a large Dumpster and still have trash to collect." Saturday's event marked the 18th year Last Minute Productions has coordinated springtime river cleanup efforts, and more than 20 organizations participated.
