Hooper House gets new roof

New Roof Darren Jones inspects his craftsmanship on the Hooper House's almost-completed new metal roof, which is the same red color as the home's 1906 original roof. Individually cut with interlocking shingles, the metal roof will last another 100 years, said foreman Robert McMahan. Although the metal roof is expensive, McMahan said restoring the roof the right way in the original Victorian pattern, rather than taking short cuts, is really "cheaper to maintain in the long run." When the chimneys were rebuilt in this restoration project, architect Odell Thompson had them restored to "flare out" like the original chimneys, rather than like the modifications made over the years. Look for the next installment of The Herald's series on the Hooper House in next week's paper. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
