Watson gains more than diploma upon graduation

By Rose Hooper

Watson Going off to college opens up new worlds and learning experiences for high school graduates. But in all the vast knowledge they acquire about the outside world, sometimes the most important lessons they learn are about themselves.

Shawn Watson of Cullowhee, who graduated in December from Barbizon International School of Modeling, gained self-confidence along with her diploma.

Watson, who describes herself as "quiet and shy," faced her fears by entering an environment made up of the most beautiful, self-assured and talented young people in the South.

Ever since high school, this 1998 graduate of Smoky Mountain High has been interested in modeling.

When auditions for the 64-year-old school of modeling were scheduled in Western North Carolina, Watson was invited to try out.

"There were 500 people there," said Watson, who admitted being a bit overwhelmed. "I was one of the 100 selected.

"My mom and dad were just as excited as I was... they have been very supportive of my decision," said this daughter of Frank and Donna Watson.

"I learned so many things at the school," she said. "Like not to wear black mascara and eye liner... that brown worked for me... and that coral and peach were good colors for me. I learned how to apply makeup, not just rubbing the foundation on, but using strokes, going up and out. They helped me select a new hair style."

All of that, however, was incidental to the main thing she learned.

"I learned to walk into a room with my head up. Learning to do that, having to walk in front of everybody critiquing you, was the hardest part of the whole school," said Watson, who attended classes in Asheville and Charlotte.

"Before, I used to walk with my head kind of down. But I gained the self confidence to walk into a room with pride and my head held high," she said.

"I know I will never be a runway model; I'm too short and too small," said Watson, who weighs 90 pounds, stands 4-foot, 11-inches tall, and wears a size zero.

"I realize my limitations, but I also realize my potential," she continued. "I am comfortable with myself and who I am. The school improved my attitude so much and helped me overcome my shyness."
