Seniors like Lewis to be honored at 90s Birthday PartyBy Rose Hooper |
When she was a teacher, Edna Lewis would often ride horseback to school. Lewis, who just recently turned 99 years old, rode horses until reaching age 89. During May, Older Americans Month, seniors like Lewis who are age 90 or better will be honored with a 90s Birthday Party Friday, May 3, from 2-4 p.m. at the Golden Age Center.

Just one more year and Edna Davis Lewis will reach the 100-year-old mark. Last week she was honored on her 99th birthday with a reception at the home of her son T.C. Lewis.
May has been designated Older Americans Month, and Friday, May 3, the Jackson County Department on Aging will sponsor a 90s Birthday Party for those in the county who, like Lewis, are age 90 or better. Lewis has been a resident of this county since 1905 when she moved here from Butte, Mont. A resident of Little Savannah Road, near Webster, she attended Webster School and Meredith School in Raleigh. She taught second-graders at Webster and other students at both Savannah and Addie and was often seen riding her special horse, Old Dick, to school. She married Ernest Lewis, a native of this county, in 1924. He was owner of the Exxon gas station on Main Street for 30 years and died in 1967. All her life she has been civic-minded and active in community activities, such as Webster PTA and the Sylva Garden Club. For years she was the home demonstration agent at Savannah School.

But perhaps her best known service to the community comes from her caretaking of Stillwell Community Cemetery, a service she has performed for more than 60 years.
When she first took over the task, the cemetery was covered in running briars, devoid of grass and full of unmarked graves. Admitting she "didn't know beans about how to start," she jumped in feet first and began pulling up briars and marking graves. She remembers the "fun" of workdays when families would come, bringing their lawn mowers and their children. Lewis' leadership established the cemetery's perpetual care fund. Her three children - T.C. Lewis and Carolyn Buchanan of Sylva and Duane Lewis of Winston-Salem - agreed that "she was always there for us, as a mother and a friend."
