Assault charge continued; case headed to mediation

By Carey Phillips

Marion Jones of Sylva, who is charged with assaulting Clerk of Court Frank Watson, will have his case go to mediation.

The 64-year-old Jones is charged with felony assault on an executive/legal/court officer and second-degree trespass and communicating threats, both misdemeanors. The incident occurred Aug. 1 in Watson's office at the Jackson County Justice Center.

Jones, a member of the Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority Board and a former Sylva Town Board member, was scheduled to appear Tuesday in District Court. The case was continued until Oct. 30 to allow mediation through the Mountain Dispute Settlement Center.

If mediation is successful, the charges will be dismissed, a court official said.
