Legal gambling age to increase at Harrah's

Beginning Jan. 1, the legal age to gamble at Harrah's Cherokee Casino will increase from 18 to 21.

"We had discretion for implementing the age increase and decided to start the year out with age 21. The tribe suggested this change to the governor during compact negotiations, and Harrah's Entertainment Inc. prefers it," said Marsha Cameron, spokesperson for the casino.

Harrah's Entertainment has been nationally recognized for its Project 21 campaign to deter under-age gambling, Cameron said. In addition, Harrah's recently rolled out a brandwide Code of Commitment that strengthens this stance and restricts the placement and content of advertising and marketing materials, she said.

The age increase is part of the compact change between the Eastern Band and Gov. Jim Hunt's office. Other changes include unlimited jackpots and increased gaming space. Those changes will not take effect until the Department of the Interior signs the new compact agreement, Cameron said.
