Fairview students to perform 'Grease' April 25-26 |
"Grease" is the word this Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, as Fairview Elementary School's seventh and eighth grades present their spring musical. The popular rock'n' roll musical set in 1959 at Rydell High School will be performed both nights at 7 p.m. in Scotts Creek School's auditorium. "This play marks the first time the seventh grade has been allowed to participate in an eighth-grade production," said producer and eighth-grade English teacher April Bryson. "For us,'Grease' is a huge undertaking; more than 65 students and parents are involved. It's turned into such a great community effort," said Bryson. "Cosmetology students at Southwestern Community College are helping with the hair styles; Western Carolina University drama students are helping coach." In the movie, John Travolta played the role of Danny Zuko, while Olivia Newton-John played love interest Sandy Dumbrowski. In Fairview's production, those lead roles will be played by Bryan McManus and Chelsea Parham (below). "For most of these students, (this show is) their first experience in drama. They've taken a real ownership of'Grease,' and I'm sure it will be a show stopper," said Bryson. The play is directed by parent volunteer Maria Thomas. Music director is Jill Keller, Fairview music teacher, with choreography by teacher Angie Dills and Janice Remacle, parent volunteer. Art teachers Fitzallen Eldridge and Gail Woody designed the set, while parent volunteer Judy McManus designed the costumes. The 1957 Chevy replica was built by James McManus, parent volunteer. Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at the door.
