County's two high schools to award diplomas to 215 seniors

Smoky Mountain High will go first, with 204 expected to walk across the stage at Western Carolina University's Ramsey Center Monday, May 28. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m.

Blue Ridge has 11 senior class members. Commencement there is set for Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the school gym.

Blue Ridge

Two Blue Ridge faculty members, Sherry Franks and Lana Bryson, will address this year's graduates.

Student speakers will include Teri Wallace, valedictorian; Arlie Clark, salutatorian; and Stephanie Hoxit, a New Century Scholar.

William E. Dillard Post 104 will present the colors, and Amy Potts, student body president, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Tommy Wrenn, youth leader at the Cashiers Church of God, will deliver the invocation and the benediction.

Roy Douthitt, assistant principal, will give the welcome. The charge to the graduates will be from Principal Lib Balcerek.

Musical presentations will include "I Will Remember You" by the senior class and "I Wish You Well My Friend" by the Blue Ridge School chorus under the direction of Johanna Abell, BRS music teacher. Abell will play the processional and recessional.

Scholarships will be presented by counselor Claudia Trine.

Diplomas will be awarded by Balcerek, Douthitt and McCary with Balcerek conferring degrees. Members of the Blue Ridge senior class include:

Smoky Mountain

Outgoing Assistant Principal Libby Knight will present the commencement address at Smoky Mountain High. She will be introduced by Jake Lunnen, senior class vice president.

Student speakers include Veni Manickam, valedictorian; Matt Wood, salutatorian; Cassidy Morgan, senior class president; Cara Reid, student body president; and Krystal Hoyle, a New Century Scholar who will make special remarks about the New Century Scholars program.

Cassie Proffitt, a senior honor student, will deliver the invocation. The welcome will be from Justin Cooper, senior class treasurer, and senior student Jon Williams will give the slide show presentation.

Assistant Principals Ken Henke and Knight will present the candidates for graduation. Diplomas will be awarded by Principal Kenny Nicholson and Superintendent McCary. Nicholson will issue the declaration of graduates.
