Memorial garden dedicated to Henry Galloway

By Rose Hooper

Galloway Galloway Hillcrest Elementary School in Morganton dedicated a memorial garden to the late Henry Galloway in May.

Galloway, who died in 2000, was the school's principal from 1957 until his retirement. He was also district principal in Sylva from 1952-55.

At the dedication ceremony, David Burleson, Burke County Schools superintendent, spoke of Galloway's dedication and hard work. Burleson cited Galloway's contributions to the many students and teachers with whom he had worked over the years.

It was the students at Hillcrest who conceived the idea of a memorial garden to honor Galloway. Decorative stones in the garden were designed by art students.

"Henry had a special way of relating to students," said his widow, Edie Galloway, who lives in Whittier. "He could see potential in students when others couldn't."

One who would agree with her is Gary Carden of Sylva. Galloway was principal of Sylva High School when Carden graduated in 1953.

"I'm sure that Western North Carolina is full of residents who have fond memories of Mr. Galloway, and a significant number of them owe him a considerable debt. I am one. I would not have gone to college if Henry Galloway had not made it possible," said Carden, a local storyteller, playwright and Elderhostel teacher.

Galloway earned a bachelor's degree in science and math from Western Carolina University and a master's degree from George Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn.

He served as a naval officer during World War II and, subsequent to his naval service, as a principal for schools in Fontana, Stecoah, Sylva and Morganton for 42 years.
