Frank's farewell

New superintendent visits

Past and present colleagues honored retiring Superintendent Frank Burrell during a reception Thursday afternoon (Jan. 18) at Jackson County Schools' Central Office. Burrell, who began his career with local schools in 1968, succeeded Charles McConnell as superintendent in July 1997. Congratulating Burrell are his wife, Louise, left, a former second-grade teacher at Cullowhee Valley; and Wanda Jones, who retired last year as Smoky Mountain High's media center director. Burrell will step down Jan. 31; Jackson County's next superintendent, Mack McCary, will officially begin his duties Feb. 1.
