Golf course planned in Village of Forest HillsBy Rose Hooper |

Get ready to swing again in Forest Hills. If Don Stewart has his way, the village will once again sport a golf course.
Speaking at the village council meeting Monday night (Feb. 3), Stewart told council members he has been negotiating with property owner Bruce Greene to purchase the 69-acre former golf course site. Previous plans for commercial use of large parcels within the village were halted last year after the newly-incorporated town enacted its zoning ordinance. A golf course, however, complies with the R-1 residential district designation, said Councilman Dick Iobst. "Other related uses" permitted within that single-family dwelling district include "public parks, greenways, golf courses and playgrounds," Iobst pointed out. Stewart, who said he has previously developed mainly 18-hole courses, proposed the village course would consist of nine holes and eventually include a club house. "The soonest acquisition I'm looking at is April 18," the Whittier resident told council members. When asked about increased traffic in the village, Stewart estimated an additional 77 cars per day would visit his golf course. The additional traffic should not pose a problem for the village, Stewart said. "We're not looking at that traffic to be coming through the village; we're looking at an entrance near N.C. 107." |
