Forest Hills takes up sewer issue

By Rose Hooper

Is it feasible to bring sewer service to the Village of Forest Hills?

Council members are charged with studying options.

Part of what they will study is a feasibility study prepared by the Asheville engineering firm of W.K. Dickson. The council paid $3,000 for the study, Mayor Jim Davis told the board at its Monday night (Aug. 5) meeting.

Dickson estimated that bringing sewer service to the village would cost approximately $2 million. However, that figure was before Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority raised their rates July, members pointed out.

Davis said Dickson's plan outlined two specific options. The first plan total gravitywould run the lines along the lawns towards the former golf course property. The second plan, requiring a pump system, would take the lines along North and South Country Club drives.

TWSA currently provides sewer service to the surrounding area, including the University Inn.

At their October meeting council members will meet with Dickson representatives to discuss Forest Hills' sewer options.

On Aug. 26 the council will sponsor a presentation by Fleming Bell, professor of municipal law with the N.C. Institute of Government. Fleming will discuss "Aspects of Municipal Law" at 7 p.m. at the Jackson County Recreation Center and will answer questions following his presentation which is open to other municipalities, as well as the public.

Because of the Labor Day holiday, the next Forest Hills council meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at the new recreation center in Cullowhee.

Two public meetings will also be held that evening; one, adding the Jackson County cell tower ordinance as an addendum to the village's ordinance and secondly, reducing the size of the village planning board.
