Planning board chair resigns in Forest Hills

By Rose Hooper

Larry Kolenbrander, chairman of the Village of Forest Hills planning board, has resigned his position, citing incompatibility.

Kolenbrander, who led the village's effort to develop a zoning ordinance, expressed his displeasure last month at recent village action.

That action, Kolenbrander told board members at their June 17 public hearing, negated the hard work and diligence of the planning board. Specifically, Kolenbrander was referring to the council's elimination from the ordinance of commercial and multi-family development.

Following the public hearing, council members voted to remove such designations from the ordinance, along with other changes.

"Your piecemeal re-working of that ordinance reflects the council's own self interest," Kolenbrander told them.

In submitting his letter of resignation, Kolenbrander said his vision for the village is "no longer compatible with the current board." He also resigned as the village's Greenways representative.

At its July 1 meeting, council members voted to accept Kolenbrander's resignation, along with the resignation of Elsie Beaver, assistant clerk.

With Ian Pritchard and Ann Chambers rotating off the planning board June 30, Mayor Jim Davis requested council members "come up with worthy candidates to replace them."

In giving his report to the council, finance officer Jim Weir said he "was pleased with the end-of-fiscal-year condition" of the village.

"While revenues projected for the year were $40,200, despite the state shortfalls, we came very close to that," Weir said of the actual $38,316 in revenues.

With its combined checking and money market accounts, the village has $71,391 on hand, he said. Of that, $23,000 is in Powell Bill funds, specifically targeted for streets and sidewalk projects.

Also this week, council members took official action to change their meeting place to the new Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee.
