Quin Theaters are open following fire last week

By Carey Phillips

A fire Dec. 20 at the Quin Theaters caused smoke damage, which resulted in the facility being shut down for two nights.

Co-owner Forrest Bryson said the fire started in a popcorn machine before the theaters had opened. Only employees were in the building at the time.

The theaters were closed Wednesday night and Thursday night as clean-up efforts continued but reopened for business Friday, said Bryson, who expressed his appreciation for the "quick response of the Sylva Fire Department."

"There was smoke in both theatres, the projection room and everywhere else," said fire department spokesman Dale Nations of the situation upon arrival.

Employees had tried unsuccessfully to put the blaze out with a fire extinguisher, Nations said. "We got trucks on the scene quick," he said.

Nations credited Brian Wellmon, the first fireman to arrive, with helping to quickly extinguish the fire.
