Dillsboro's mayor not seeking re-electionBy Rose Hooper |
|
Longtime Dillsboro Mayor Wade Wilson has announced he will not seek re-election.
Mayor for the past 22 years, Wilson said he needs to spend more time with his family. Filing for municipal elections opened last Friday, July 6, and will close at noon on Friday, Aug. 3. The town of Sylva experienced the earliest filing activity with current Mayor Brenda Oliver filing for re-election on opening day. Board members Maurice Moody, Lynda Sossamon, Audrey Tritt and Eldon Cabe have also filed for four of the five available council seats. Voting in Sylva this November will mark the town's first non-partisan election and the beginning of staggered terms for town board members. The mayor will be elected to a four-year term, as will be the top two vote-getters on town board. The remaining three members elected will serve two-year terms. In Forest Hills, Richard Iobst has filed for one of the two staggered council seats up for election this term. The office of mayor is also up for re-election. In both Dillsboro and Webster, the mayor and five council seats are open. Along with filers, voters face a deadline. Those planning to vote in the Nov. 6 general election must register by Oct. 12. |
