Race for sheriff draws early interest in county

Filing for political offices in North Carolina got under way Monday, and in Jackson County the race drawing the most interest is for sheriff.

Incumbent Jim Cruzan along with challengers Jimmy Ashe, Larry Bryson and Joe Frigo had filed for the position as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. All are Democrats.

Democrat Stacy Buchanan, a commissioner from District 3, has filed to run for chairman of the county commission. Roberta Crawford, also a Democrat, is seeking re-election from District 1, and Democrat Eddie Madden has filed from District 4.

Incumbent Democrats Frank Watson and Joe Hamilton have filed for clerk of court and register of deeds, respectively.

Seeking re-election to the General Assembly are Sen. Dan Robinson and Rep. Phil Haire. Both are Democrats.

In the non-partisan school board races, incumbents Martha Queen and James Roper have filed from Districts 2 and 3, respectively.

The filing period ends at noon Friday, March 1.
