Witnessing historic elk release

Burrell & Watson Jackson County Commissioner Conrad Burrell, right, and Zach Watson, son of Frank and Donna Watson of Cullowhee, were among the more than 700 people to attend the experimental elk release in Great Smoky Mountains National Park last Friday (Feb. 2). The five-year experiment was brought to fruition through the efforts of individuals in the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the park's National Historical Association and Friends of the Smokies, who have contributed to the $1 million project.

The 25 elk released into a 3-acre pen in Cataloochee Valley were taken from Kentucky's Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area two weeks ago. These animals will be released from the pen in the spring, and plans call for a total of 75 animals to be released during 2002 and 2003. Living up to its mission

to reintroduce native species when possible, officials with the Smokies have successfully brought river otter, Peregrine falcons and three species of small fish back to the park. - Herald photos by Lisa Majors-Duff
