Honoring industry

Jackson County's Economic Development Commission Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling Jackson County's Economic Development Commission and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce hosted a Nov. 5 luncheon in Sylva to recognize the county's 22 manufacturers. Instead of honoring a single business, as has been done in the past, the EDC purchased an engraved brick for each manufacturer. The bricks will become part of the EDC section of downtown sidewalk in front of the Hooper House. Western Carolina University Chancellor John Bardo, the featured speaker, highlighted WCU's goal of becoming a partner with local governments and businesses to spur economic development in the county. Industry representatives present for Sunday's gathering at Lulu's on Main included, from left, Eileen Wheeldon of Webster Enterprises, Don Arrington of Jackson Paper, Ronnie Barker of Harrison Construction, Arlene Stewart of Webster Enterprises, Bill Schutters of Ashley Co. and EDC Chairman Tom McClure.
