Town annexes Dillsboro Crossing

By Rose Hooper

Following a public hearing Dec. 3 during which no one voiced objection, members of the Dillsboro Town Board annexed Dillsboro Crossing into the town limits.

Developers of the housing community had voluntarily requested the annexation of their 12.65 acres on the southeast corner of U.S. 74 and U.S. 441.

"We did this in the spirit of community mindedness," said Jay Coward, one of the developers. "We are going to be using Dillsboro water and sewer lines and roadways, so we felt we should pay our fair share. We want to be a part of Dillsboro."

In addition, developer Jim Dukes said being in the town limits makes Dillsboro Crossing eligible for Powell Bill funds to help pay for street lights, side walks and road maintenance.

Annexation benefits to the town include additional tax revenues from the property and a larger share of the statešs local option sales tax reimbursement, which is based on population.

Construction, which will include townhouses, duplexes, garden villas, condos and a Heritage Center Building, is under way in the multi-level community.

Dillsboro Mayor Jean Hartbarger called the community "an exciting way for Dillsboro to grow."

"Affordable housing, especially for seniors, is really needed in this area," board member Emma Wertenberger concurred.

The annexation does not take in the Jarrett Hills subdivision, which adjoins Dillsboro Crossing.
