Dillsboro adopts vision statement

By Rose Hooper

The town of Dillsboro has a vision and a vision statement.

At its June meeting, the town board adopted the following vision statement:

"The town of Dillsboro will continue to explore economic and community development while respecting heritage preservation.

"The town shall always focus on protecting natural resources and other assets of the community which make a visit a quality experience.

"While recognizing the importance of tourism, it will seek opportunities to broaden the business development and encourage expansion of its boundaries as urbanization occurs adjacent to its municipal limits.

"Dillsboro has and always must strive to make the community a good place to live, work and invest, as well as an interesting place to visit."

While working on its vision, the town is also working on its visual image. A new bricked sidewalk from Riverwood Shops into town has been completed, and work is under way on a bricked sidewalk leading from the park near the dam.

"The Job Corps is providing the labor for us," said town clerk Herb Nolan. "They poured the last concrete Monday and should be finished with the bricking by the end of the week."

Originally, the N.C. Department of Transportation was going to provide the concreting and curbing, with the Job Corps just filling in the brick work. However, the town decided to go with the Job Corps for the entire project, Nolan said, including the storm drains.

The next project will be to make the Dillsboro Post Office wheelchair accessible. Nolan said that will involve moving the flag pole, pouring a slab for the mail box and smoothing the curbing from Depot Street to Haywood Road.

In an agreement with DOT, traffic islands like the one in front of the Jarrett House will be removed this fall and replaced with crosswalks.

In other Dillsboro news, any new taxi drivers who want to be licensed for the town of Dillsboro must maintain a location and phone in the town, Nolan said.
