Playing a medley of country, gospel, bluegrass and a tribute to the late Chet Atkins, the Deitz Family Band (from left Joe, Bill and Delores Deitz) entertained guests at Miss Lucy's picnic Sunday in Webster. The picnic, part of the Summer Evenings in Webster series, kicked off the county's Fourth of July celebration. The annual picnic, begun in 1946 by Miss Lucy Hedden to celebrate victory in World War II, was held at the home of Sue Monroe. On Wednesday, July 4, the Fiddling Dills Sisters, the Cullowhee Valley Boys, Sometimes Creek featuring Jared Fisher and rising country music star Matt Stillwell of Sylva entertained during Sylva's downtown celebration, which began at 5 p.m. and ended with fireworks at dark. -Herald photo by Rose Hooper
