County approves cell tower ordinanceBy Lisa Majors-Duff |

By a vote of 5-0, Jackson County commissioners adopted an ordinance to regulate the construction of cell towers.
The second-reading vote was held during the board's March 28 special meeting. A first-reading vote failed to approve the document due to the absence of Commissioner Conrad Burrell March 25. "I just want to make sure our people have the privilege of using a cell phone," Burrell said before casting his vote in favor of the measure. The only thing that would prevent a company from providing service to the more rural sections of the county is customer demand and profit, Chairman Jay Denton said. "Rural areas may not be covered until the profit base is there," he said. Commissioners will meet tonight (Thursday) at 5 p.m. instead of at the regular 7 p.m. Bill Williams of the N.C. Department of Transportation's Aviation Division is expected to address board members on acceptable measure designed to regulate helicopter sight-seeing businesses. |
