Sesquicentennial time capsule buried

Time Capsule Assisting with the burial of the sesquicentennial time capsule Nov. 1 were, from left (with shovels), Joe Rhinehart, president of both the Jackson County and Webster historical societies; Maurice Moody, Sylva town board members and vice chairman of the Sesquicentennial Committee; Jeff Carpenter, Jackson County recreation and parks director and chairman of the Sesquicentennial Committee; and Lynn Allen, secretary of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Others present included, from left, Betty Kimble, Billie Jo Bryson, Bill Crawford, Mack McCary, Rusty Ellis, Ruth Shuler, Roy Shuler, Doris Moody Thweatt, Lib Cowan and Mary Moody. In addition to a vault-type box donated by Southwestern Community College, each county school collected student papers and other artifacts and made its own time capsule from a length of PVC pipe decorated with the school colors. A granite marker donated by Moody Funeral Home will be erected on the site, instructing county residents to dig it up Sept. 8, 2051, at the same time the time capsule from the county's 1951 centennial is due to be excavated. - Herald photo by Lynn Hotaling
