Power pole snaps

Broken Pole

Residents of Webster, Ashe Settlement and nearby areas experienced a power outage Monday morning (March 19) due to two downed power poles on North River Road. "Power was off in a widespread area of Sylva from 5:30 in the morning to about 11 a.m.," said Fred Alexander, Duke Power/Nantahala Division district manager. "We had crews on the job at 6 a.m., and those who didn't get their power restored by 11 a.m., mainly those along River Road, were on a little after lunchtime." Alexander said he's not sure what snapped the two poles, although he has several theories, including a broken guy wire supporting the poles. "We have more than one way of routing power into Sylva, so fortunately we rerouted power at the substation to get most folks back on quickly," Alexander said. -Herald photo by Rose Hooper
