Walking down Memory LaneBy Rose Hooper |
|
Up one side and down the other. That's the route Bob Hall will take participants as they leisurely stroll down Sylva's Main Street Friday, June 29.Bob, 78, will describe what Sylva was like when he was a young boy growing up on Keener Street, just two doors down from John Parris. "Much of Sylva was residential," said Hall, who lives in Asheville now. "My father, the late David McKee Hall, ran the Sylva Supply, so that figured quite heavily in my growing up." Hall said he can recall Sylva's meat market, feed supply and even the livestock auction barn where Highlands Laundry is now. A native of Sylva, Hall's mother is the late Edith Moore Hall. "I'm hoping others who have early memories of Sylva will join me," Hall said. "That will make the walk even more interesting." Participants are asked to gather at the old Jackson County Courthouse fountain at 7 p.m. for this Sylva Sesquicentennial event sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Association. |
