A mighty BIG ear

Big Ear Last year Avery Greene of Whittier's Wilmot community grew a 14-inch ear of corn and thought that was impressive. But this season, he pulled a 15-inch ear from the field near his house on Bumgarner Cemetery Road. "I don't know the name of it, but it sure is good," said 86-year-old Greene, who takes some of his crop each year to the mill and grinds it into corn meal for cornbread. "I make some pretty good cornbread," he said. "The rest of it what I don't give to friends I boil and cut it off. Then sometimes I make it into creamed corn. That's the only way I can eat it now. But I don't take a bite what I don't thank the Lord for providing for me." - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
