Three facing charges following Sunday fight

By Carey Phillips

Three people required hospital treatment and three others are facing charges following a fight Sunday night in Sylva.

Some 40 to 50 people were in the area when the fight broke out shortly before 10 p.m. on West Main Street near the intersection of U.S. 23 Business and N.C. 107, Detective Steve Lillard of the Sylva Police Department said. The fight was in the vicinity of Smith's Body Shop, but people were gathered on both sides of the street, he said.

Reggie Stanberry, 28, of Bryson City, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. Charged with affray are Ross Chittom of Bryson City and Scotty Nelson of Whittier. They are both 19. All three have been released on bond, according to Lillard.

The most seriously injured was Nevile Anderson, 26, of Dillsboro. He was taken to Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville. No information on his condition was available Wednesday morning. A warrant alleges that Stanberry assaulted Anderson with a knife.

Treated and released at Harris Regional Hospital were James Scott, 18, and Christopher Boyd, 20, both of Sylva.

The investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible, Lillard said. Also involved in the investigation are officers Shannon Ashe and Aimee Sumner.
