Tom Brown's apple adventures in Jackson County have proven fruitful, thanks to Sylva Herald readers who have helped him in his search for heritage apples. Local finds have included a Wolf River on Big Ridge, an apple Brown said is an old but not lost variety and tastes best after it's dried. He also found a Bryson's Seedling, a "very fine, large, red winter apple that originated in Jackson County," a Kitchen apple near Cherokee and a Sheep Nose Bell Flower near Highlands. A Clemmons resident, Brown describes himself as an "apple detective" who searches for and preserves old apple varieties. Brown will have a booth at Western Carolina University's Mountain Heritage Day Saturday, Sept. 28, displaying his collection. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
