Who will kiss the pig?
In the Family Resource Center's "Kiss the Pig"contest, three candidates are neck-in-neck for the honor of puckering up to a pig. Bob Cochran, director of social services, leads the pack with Kenny Nicholson, Smoky Mountain High School principal, just one vote behind. Sheriff Jim Cruzan, who had been out front for most of the race, has fallen to third place. "But the week's not over yet,"his deputies say as they solicit last-minute votes. Rose Hooper of The Sylva Herald is in fourth place, but the tally is changing rapidly as evidenced by Jeff Carpenter, director of Jackson County Recreation and Parks, who jumped a whopping 112 votes in two days. Jackson County Commission Chair Jay Denton said he is throwing his votes over to Sylva Mayor Brenda Oliver. Meanwhile, Sonja Haynes, now in fifth place, is reported to be practicing her puckering. "At this point, it's anyone's kiss,"said Family Resource Director Linda McElroy. "Like Saturday's Kentucky Derby, we could have a surprise winner at the end of this race!² To view this much-anticipated pig kissing, attend the Family Resource Center's Saturday shindig, May 12, starting at 4 p.m. at the old Webster School. The Diamond Cutters will perform their special blend of bluegrass, and David Noland will dish up barbecue at $3 a plate. Noland stressed that his special barbecue is already seasoning and is not to be confused with the pig that will be kissed. All tax-deductible donations from the contest and barbecue will benefit the Family Resource Center and its programs serving the children and families of Jackson County.
