A Whittier woman died Saturday morning as a result of a two-vehicle
accident in Sylva.
Eddie Marie Bennett Gibson, 63, of South Piney Mountain Road,
was killed in the 10:15 a.m. accident on West Main Street in front
of Mark Watson Park, according to Police Chief Jeff Jamison.
Gibson was traveling west in a 1989 Toyota, which was struck head-on
by an eastbound 1992 Jeep driven by Raymond Bryant Plank, 32,
of Sylva, the chief said.
Plank has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving
left of center, Jamison said.
Plank told Officer Davis Woodard that he blacked out before his
vehicle crossed the center line. Plank was treated and released
at Harris Regional Hospital, according to a hospital spokesman.
While he did not have an estimate of the speed involved, Jamison
said, "it had to be excessive."
He said neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
"We urge people to wear their seat belts and watch their
speed," Jamison said.
Woodard was assisted in his investigation by the N.C. Highway
Patrol.
