Some 60 people gathered in Webster Sunday to learn more about
the area that might be impacted if a proposed Southern Loop
is constructed. Webster native Joe Rhinehart shared stories
of historic sites that could be destroyed or compromised if
the proposed connector between U.S. 441 and N.C. 107 is constructed.
After gathering at the old Webster School, constructed of rock
from the Tuckaseigee River by Works Progress Administration
workers during the Depression, participants walked along N.C.
116 to Webster Baptist Church. The event was sponsored by the
Webster Historical Society and the Smart Roads Alliance. Oganizers
say they plan similar walks in both Locust Creek and Blanton
Branch communities in the coming weeks.
